Privacy Policy

How PDF Viewer handles your information โ€” in plain language.

App: PDF Viewer Application ID: com.dowble.pdfviewer Version: 1.0 Effective: 27 June 2026

The short version

1. Who we are

PDF Viewer (the "app", "we", or "us") is an Android application for viewing PDF documents โ€” opening, reading, zooming, searching, bookmarking, and annotating PDFs entirely on your device. This Privacy Policy explains what the app does and does not do with information on your device.

2. Information the app accesses

PDF Viewer processes the following information locally on your device only. None of it is transmitted off the device.

a. Finding PDFs on your device

If you grant file access, the app scans your device's storage to find PDF files and list them in your library, grouped by the folder they live in (for example Download, WhatsApp, or Books). It reads only basic file details for this listing โ€” file name, size, folder, and modification date. The listing is built and stored only on your device and is never uploaded. You can decline this access and still open PDFs individually.

b. PDF files you open

To display a document the app reads the file's contents to render pages, extract text so you can search within the document or have it read aloud, read the table of contents (outline), and read document properties (such as title, author, and page count). Files are opened read-only, are processed on your device, and are never uploaded or copied to us.

c. Library & reading data

So the app can show your recent and favorite files and let you continue where you left off, it stores โ€” in its own private, on-device database โ€” basic details about documents you've opened (file name, size, page count, dates, and a reference to the file), your last page and reading progress, reading-time statistics, bookmarks, recent search terms, and any annotations you create. Annotations (such as freehand drawings) are saved as a separate overlay on your device and are not written into your original PDF files. Page thumbnails are rendered and cached locally to make the library load quickly.

d. App preferences

Your settings โ€” such as theme, accent color, view mode (day/night/sepia), default zoom, scroll/layout options, sort order, and rendering quality โ€” are stored locally on the device.

PDF Viewer does not access your contacts, location, photo library, microphone, camera, or accounts.

3. Permissions and why they are needed

PermissionPurpose
MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
(All files access โ€” you grant it manually)
Used only to find PDF files across your device so they can be listed in your library, grouped by folder. The app reads PDFs and basic file details; it does not modify, move, or upload your files. You grant this from Android settings and can revoke it at any time โ€” the app still works without it for files you open directly.
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
(Android 12 and older only โ€” maxSdkVersion 32)
The equivalent read access used to find and open PDFs on older Android versions.
POST_NOTIFICATIONS & foreground service
(Read-aloud)
Used only to show the playback notification (play / pause / skip) while a document is being read aloud, so audio can continue with the screen off. Read-aloud uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine.
Storage Access Framework / Share
(no special permission)
When you pick a file or open one from another app, Android grants the app temporary read access to only that specific file.

The app is built without the INTERNET permission, so it is technically incapable of sending your documents or data over the network.

4. How information is used

Information accessed by the app is used solely to provide its features: opening and rendering your PDFs, searching and navigating them, remembering your library, bookmarks, progress and annotations, and applying your preferences. We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the features you see in the app.

5. Data sharing and transfers

We do not share, sell, rent, or disclose your information to anyone. Because the app has no network access, your documents and reading data never leave your device and are never sent to us or to any third party. If you use the in-app Share or Save a copy action, that is initiated by you and handled by Android's own share sheet and storage โ€” you choose where the file goes. No serversNo third partiesNo cloud

6. Data retention and deletion

Your library entries, bookmarks, search history, annotations, thumbnails and settings remain on your device until you remove them. You can:

7. Security

All processing happens on-device and app data is kept in Android's private per-app storage, which other apps cannot read. Because nothing is uploaded, there is no server-side database that could be breached. You remain in control through Android's permission system at all times.

8. Children's privacy

PDF Viewer is a general-purpose utility and is not directed to children under 13. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since the app collects no data and has no online component, it poses no data-collection risk to users of any age.

9. Third-party services

PDF Viewer does not integrate advertising networks, analytics SDKs, or social login providers, and embeds no third-party trackers. The app is built with open-source libraries (including the PDFium rendering engine and Android Jetpack) that run entirely on your device and do not transmit your data. The read-aloud feature passes page text to the text-to-speech engine that is already installed on your device (for example Google's Speech Services); that engine is provided by your device or its vendor and operates under its own privacy policy.

10. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under privacy laws such as the GDPR or CCPA. Since PDF Viewer does not collect or hold any of your personal data on our side, there is nothing for us to access, correct, export, or delete on your behalf โ€” full control rests with you on your device.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy if the app's features change. When we do, we will revise the "Effective" date above and publish the updated policy at this address. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
